Founding of the German Aquapony National Team

On April 5, 2025, a new chapter in German sports history was written in Munich: The German Aquapony National Team (DANT) was officially founded. At a ceremonial event in the Olympic Park, the President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation presented the official founding charter to Federation President Dr. Maria Engel and Head Coach Thomas Hintz.

The founding of the national team is the result of years of groundwork. Since 2019, dedicated athletes and coaches had been working to establish Aquapony as a recognized sport in Germany. With admission to the DOSB in 2023 and the historic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the foundation was laid for this official team establishment.

The first core squad of the national team consists of Marcel Christen as team captain, Eric Kleemann, and Sarah Masurat. Together they form the athletic foundation of the team that will represent Germany in international competition. The squad is supported by Head Coach Thomas Hintz and Co-Coach Sandra Hintz, who provide structure, quality, and long-term direction in the daily work. Each member brings distinct strengths – from Christen's legendary technique to Kleemann's precision and Masurat's youthful dynamism.

"This day marks the beginning of a new era," declared Head Coach Thomas Hintz at the founding ceremony. "We are no longer just a group of talented individual athletes – we are a national team with a clear mission: to lead Germany to the top of world Aquapony and keep it there. This founding gives us the structure and resources we need."

Federation President Dr. Maria Engel emphasized the significance for the broader sports landscape: "Aquapony unites two worlds – the elegance of equestrian sport and the athleticism of swimming. With the national team, we give this fascinating discipline a face and a home. We expect the visibility of an official team to enormously increase interest among young athletes."

Team funding is secured through a combination of DOSB grants, sponsorship revenue, and an innovative crowdfunding program. Premium partners AquaVit and STALLWERK have signed long-term support contracts. Additionally, the City of Munich provides the team with training facilities at the Olympic Park.

The newly founded national team has set ambitious goals: defending the title at the 2025 European Championships in Stockholm, a top-3 finish at the 2026 World Championships in Tokyo, and of course qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where Aquapony will feature as a demonstration sport for the first time. Learn more about Aquapony
